Pew Data Reveals Gavin Newsom Would be Awful Choice for 2024

Newsom sent his children to an open private school as California public school students endured some of the world’s longest public school closures

California Governor Gavin Newsom is ready to run for president in 2024 and seems to believe that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will be the GOP nominee. While I identify as a center-left social democrat and find much to admire about California, I think Newsom would be a terrible choice and lose against DeSantis.

Karen Vaites, a New York City literacy advocate, shared fascinating polling data this morning from the Pew Research Center.

Vaites noted that the data reveals a “key area of bipartisan consensus” about the contentious pandemic years, which is that “we failed to meet children’s needs [throughout] the pandemic.” According to the data, 62% of U.S. adults believe that “meeting the education needs of K-12 students” has been “too little [of a] priority” since February 2020.

If Newsom is the 2024 Democratic nominee, the race will be between a Florida governor who successfully reopened all of his state’s public schools in summer
