School is a right, not a political football.
This was lost on some people in 2020.
After the CDC released school reopening guidance in summer 2020, Andy Slavitt — a former UnitedHealth Group executive, Obama administration Medicare and Medicaid chief, podcaster, author, and amateur comedian — was outraged. Outraged.
Sharing a link to the guidance, he lamented that “The @CDCGov has fallen so far. The document is sad.”
Disturbingly, he then proceeded to mock the fact that the authors had written “school is important for a child’s development.”
It is almost difficult to process that Slavitt found language in the school reopening document so worthy of opprobrium, but he did, because he was apparently hyper-focused on coronavirus transmission to the exclusion of almost everything else happening in society. When announcing the school reopening guidance on July 23, 2020, former CDC Director Robert R. Redfield sounded more like a sober Emmanuel Macron than Donald Trump.
